Project background / Contexte du projet
 Materials exposed to a fluid flow can erode over time, however the rate of erosion can be so slow that it can only be observed after extended service, in some cases up to many years. This makes it a challenge for manufacturers to select appropriate materials because the test time may be impractical for timely decisions. A system to perform an erosion test in a relatively short period of time but that is representative of an extended service time is needed to make this process more efficient.

In a 'regular' test a manufacturer might rotate a 10 cm diameter, 5 cm thick disc of a polymer material (for example, 3D printed material) about a central shaft in an open tank of water at  80C.  The shaft rotates at 10 rpm and it should last 1 year without visible signs of erosion on the disc. However, the manufacturer would like to complete the erosion tests in as short a period of time as possible, while also keeping the system temperature no greater than 40C and the system pressure at atmospheric conditions. 

Your task is to design and build a prototype test set up that can be used to accelerate erosion testing of rotating components. The system should have the flexibility to test the erosion resistance of other materials, which are designed for other operating speeds and lifetimes, in the future therefore features that accelerate the erosion must be well thought out and have carefully controlled parameters.  The flexibility of the system to test different conditions is an advantage. The system should be able to show the results of tests to prove how it has successfully accelerated erosion on a given part.
