Hydrogen bubble templating can create electrodes very suitable for water electrolysis and thus has major implications for a potential Hydrogen Economy. The current densities required to produce it and consequent heat generation make it impractical to plate large areas at once. These power issues can be mitigated by only plating a small area of the substrate at once. By mating an open source Arduino-powered potentiostat with  modular 3D printer, the electrochemical reaction needs to be localized with a total equipment cost below CAD $500. Challenges remain, in particular sufficiently containing the plating area, and as of yet there has not been an opportunity to test with nickel electroplating solution.
