Project background
In the client's bedroom, at a distance of about 15 feet from her bed, there is a sliding window which she would like to be able to open and close from the bed. She currently has several lights that she controls with her iPhone, so adding another smartphone-controllable device would be simplest for her.
The window frame is roughly 49" x 37" (wide by high) and the window is comprised of two panes - the nearest of which slides horizontally. There is a blind that comes down on the near side of the window frame - leaving a space of roughly 2 inches between the blind and the window handle.
Your task is to design a device which can remotely open or close a window using a smartphone. The device must not block too much of the window to let light in. It must also be easy to understand how to operate the window for different caregivers in the home. These caregivers will also need a way to operate the window without hindering the access by the client (using a different button for example). It should be secure and easy to maintain. Ideally the window should be able to open/close manually in case of a power outage.
