Client Information
Empathy is defined as the ability to share and understand the feelings of another. Perspective taking is the ability to understand another’s point of view. The ultimate goal of this project is to train people on implicit bias and improve inclusivity by understanding other points of view. This can be done utilizing the unique affordance of virtual reality (VR) that allows users to walk a virtual mile in the shoes of another. VR has the ability to immerse a user and create a more powerful experience which is why it is heavily used in video games. It is also being heavily developed for educational and training purposes.
Your task is to design an immersive tool that fosters diversity and inclusion. A user should be able to walk in someone else’s shoes and experience situations as if they were a different person by choosing a different profile from themselves. Your tool can focus on one or more of these issues:
- Race
- Gender
- Sexual orientation
- Religion
- Visible or invisible disability
- Others
Past attempts
There was a similar attempt that focused on race from a different institution. There were also multiple attempts as part of the first year design course. The goal now is to refine the ideas that they came up with and build the library of simulations.
