Back up camera and mount that allows the user to see behind them granting the user better awareness of surrounding objects. App enabled software streams footage to phone.
Problem statement
The client, who has limited mobility and visibility in a wheelchair, wants to be able to see behind them to help with spatial awareness when turning, going forward, and reversing to help in avoiding any obstacles in their way. An electronic camera system that could be attached to the wheelchair is the desired solution that would be developed depending on time and money constraints.
Definition
A wide angle camera will be secured to the back of the wheelchair, providing a good field of vision behind the wheelchair. The camera will be secured to the chair with strong durable velcro. The camera will be powered by a usb port found underneath one of the armrests. The video feed from the camera will be displayed on a phone with bluetooth that will be mounted on one of the chair arms. The mount will be adjustable to provide a comfortable angle to view the phone.
Solution
The wide angle camera will allow for a good field of view, and since most cameras that are available are at least 1080p, the video quality should not be an issue. The combined weight of the camera and wires should be rather low, however, the mount for the phone could be an issue in staying under the 600g target. The camera and phone are intended to be connected via bluetooth to reduce the need for additional wiring. The main drawbacks to this design is the power source. Since both the camera and phone will be powered by the chair, the amount of power used must be monitored as to not cause problems with extended use of the chair. Another possible issue is the bulkiness of the phone mount. If the mount is large and obstructive, this may cause problems with the user, therefore it is important to produce a mount that is compact.
