For people with disabilities it is often hard to interact with and have the same control on the outside world that was designed for people without disabilities. Solutions that have been developed with home automation in mind seem to offer possibilities to start bridging this gap. Z-wave technology for example is a mesh network that uses low-energy radio waves to communicate between devices wirelessly. Z-wave is ideal because of the mesh network where each node can transmit and receive information and the devices are backwards compatible since they use the same protocol.

This Client would like to have the ability to control his immediate environment either at home or outside the home. He has a Tobii I13 device, which is a lightweight windows PC with built-in eye tracking hardware, with the Smartbox Grid 3 software. From there he would like to control any number of Z-wave nodes through a control hub that has been configured with the devices. For example this is a Z-wave node to be controlled:

Your task is to design a Z-wave compatible system that will allow the Client to easily control external devices wirelessly. The system must not require any technical knowledge to operate or to maintain for the caregivers and must be robust. For any extra hardware that may be required, it must not obscure the partner window on the back of the Tobii device and must be easy to install. The system should ideally be as versatile as possible while being user friendly and accessible.
