Project background
Many people in wheelchairs or who have low mobility use a pick-up (or gripper) stick to reach for objects around them and pick things up off the floor. The standard pick up stick uses the grip handle to shorten a wire that when pulled through a coupling brings the gripper jaws together and they involve hand gripping to close the gripper end around the object to be picked up, and maintain this until the object is retrieved and released. However some people do not have the hand strength and/or grip to operate such a device. Your task is to design a powered system that will use a standard gripper and replace the hand grip requirement and will hold the object for recovery. Components could include a motor to coil the wire or operate the handle and the needed switches/controls and power source for operation.
Past attempts
There have been a few previous attempts to solving this problem like this one made from scratch. Here we are looking for a cheaper alternative that could use the existing mechanical device as a base. https://makerepo.com/project_proposals/179
