Project background / Contexte du projet
Active foot amputees (AFA) refer to persons with one or two foot amputations that have an active lifestyle. Due to the recent availability of different foot prostheses, prosthetists must prescribe the ideal foot prostheses for each amputee. This prescription is becoming more and more difficult to decide as the number of products on the market continues to rise. This lab is seeking an integrated solution mechanical device for in-lab and in-field testing of prosthetic foot and ankle components (see attached sketch for artist rendition). The device should allow for able-bodied researchers to don different models of foot prostheses in order to better understand the loading, dynamics and testing of these prosthetic elements as used by AFAs. The required device would allow for the following 5 design requirements: ability to mount different prosthetic foot models and adjust the heights accordingly, ability to make minor adjustments for dorsiflexion and plantarflexion, significant restriction of the user’s ankle motion to transfer ankle motion to the prosthesis, a mounting location for a rugged camera (similar to GoPro), a mounting for other on-board equipment such as battery packs and microcontrollers.  Prototype designs of the requested device would be fabricated and tested locally in Mexico with engineering design reviews and feedback for improvements.
