Project background
Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) technology has come a long way in the last decade but has primarily focused on the consumer market for gaming and entertainment. Recently we are starting to see this technology move into the manufacturing, industrial, and construction industry as a useful tool. Although there is high potential of greater efficiency and collaboration, implementation is off to a slow start. One of the main challenges to VR/AR adoption in Construction is hardware requirements, ease of use, and software costs. Our construction teams in the field are tasked with putting together increasingly complex buildings and the need for better visualization of the design has never been greater.
The project goal is to develop a solution which will allow our construction team in the field to easily view multidisciplinary Building Information Model (BIM) in VR/AR on a mobile device. The solution can be based on existing free to use software or developed in-house. User experience is very important and should be easily operated by any individual regardless of technical skill level. For example, select a room from a 2D plan to view that room in VR/AR with the ability to customize that view and isolate the Mechanical, Electrical, Structural and Architectural systems of that room. The solution should include instructions, training, and guides for easy implementation.
