DESCRIPTION

Problem Statement:
Our project aims to create a universal wheelchair-to-stroller attachment device that is fully usable and accessible by the wheelchair user.

Solution:

We propose an H-frame design made from square steel tubing with a telescopic middle bar, allowing it to adjust to fit a variety of wheelchair and stroller sizes. The structure includes V-clamps lined with rubber to ensure a firm grip and solid attachment to both the wheelchair and stroller. This design priorities stability, ease of use, and versatility, enabling a safe and user-friendly experience.

Cost Breakdown:

The materials consist of two 1/2" x 48" steel square tubes costing $41.70, four aluminium V-clamps at $49.50, five 3/8" bolts and five nuts costing $2.00 each, and an additional steel square tube priced at $3.00. The total estimated cost for this project is $98.20.

Key Considerations and Challenges:

To ensure a successful design, it is essential to build and test multiple prototypes. A key feature of our design is the V-clamps, which are rubber-dipped to maximise friction, providing a secure and safe grip on both the wheelchair and the stroller. Another important aspect is considering the client’s fine motor control abilities. For ease of use, we designed a simple tightening mechanism, using pins with ball ends that can slide up and down, making it manageable for those with limited dexterity.

In summary, our design emphasises safety, functionality, and ease of use to deliver an effective wheelchair-to-stroller attachment solution.
