DESCRIPTION
Our group has partnered with the Deep Roots Food Hub, a local organization focused on regenerative farming practices, to develop an above-ground weed-cutting robot. Traditional weed removal methods, such as pulling weeds by the roots or using pesticides, can disrupt the soil microbiome, which is essential for healthy crop growth. By cutting weeds at 50-60% of their height above the ground, rather than at the base of the stem, the growth of weeds is more effectively stunted. The current design scope focuses on creating a scalable device capable of cutting weeds at a height range of 20 to 50 cm above the ground. The client envisions future iterations of the device to incorporate autonomous capabilities with image recognition technology and renewable energy to power the device.
